Group Exercise Opportunities

Monday, June 30, 2014

We each have our favorite form of exercise, whether it is running, walking, yoga, strength training, or biking, alone or in groups.  For many people, exercise is more fun and they are more motivated when they are able to work out with other people.  Due to the rise in popularity of group exercise, gyms and fitness companies have come up with some different opportunities.

My personal favorite is group yoga, but for those who are bored with the predictability of your typical yoga class or spin class, here are some new, innovative, group exercise classes that you might see pop up in your community!

Forza means strength and power in Italian. This class is based on Japanese sword fighting techniques. The participant makes lunges or step movements with their legs, while using a wooden sword to cut through the air. It can be useful in strengthening and shaping both legs and arms.

Urban Rebounding

Urban Rebounding is an exercise class which takes place on a trampoline. It is a great way to increase strength as well as cardiovascular conditioning. Due to the cushion of the trampoline, it is also much easier on joints than jumping on land.

Smart Bells

The name smart bell is a play on dumbbell, and the class is centered around a circularly shaped weight, with cutouts for handles, ranging from 1.5 lbs -12 lbs. The shape of a smart bell allows for increased curving, swinging, and rotating motions, rather than linear motions. Smart bells are meant to be more functional than the original dumb bell.

While these are new and innovative classes, some of you may be like me, and are perfectly happy to stick with what you are comfortable with: yoga, spin class etc. But it is great to know that there are options out there, and that being “bored” with your workout is certainly not a viable excuse with all these choices! Keep your eyes peeled for new exciting group exercise programs at Joint Ventures!
