A Joint Defined

Thursday, March 24, 2011

A joint by definition is nothing more than a space where two bones meet. Creating space at a particular joint that needs increased range of motion can be very difficult because we have to outsmart our own body's subconscious reactions. The two key principles to keep in mind with this are that the body will always follow the path of least resistance, and our body's move, and subconsciously react, much faster than we can consciously act. When we observe human movement what we are observing most of the time are paths of least resistance and compensation. So are you creating enough space in the right areas at the right time for the right task? Or are you compensating by moving through the path of least resistance and doing your stretches incorrectly? Are you getting better, staying the same, or getting worse?

RUN! No, Wait!

Monday, March 21, 2011

Spring is in the air.  The snow has melted, the sidewalks are ice-free, and the temperature is slowly rising.  Some of you brave souls spent this snowy winter training for the Boston Marathon or other winter and spring races.  For those of us who aren’t as ambitious, it means it’s time to get out there and start running again.  But before you lace up and head out, remember that you’ve been sitting at home or doing less activity than usual for the past 3 or 4 months.  While running can be a great way to regain your fitness and maintain a healthy lifestyle, your body won’t appreciate you making it go from zero to sixty without any warning.  March is the month where we see a ton of running injuries, and many can be prevented with a few simple stretches and exercises.  I know, I know, I can hear you whining, “But it’s sunny and 60 degrees out, I want to run”.  Just be patient, and listen to this advice.  It will allow you ultimately more time running and less time with pain and frustration.
Here is a list of some common running injuries:

Muscle Tears and Pulls

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

We pull or tear muscles in areas of our bodies where we have good flexibility, movement, and motion.  What?  Yup, you read that right – areas where we have “good” flexibility.  We don't pull or tear muscles in areas where we don't have motion, however these areas may be the most important.  But often times it's the tight areas in a muscle that can be the cause of a tear or pull.

Exercising in Space

Friday, March 11, 2011

Individuals get injured due to the stress of the forces acting on their bodies. Gravity and ground reaction forces are 2 of the most popular injury causing stresses. If we all lived on a spaceship in the absence of gravity (unrealistic we realize, but stick with me…) we wouldn't have the same types of injuries.  If we can figure out why your body is not absorbing forces properly, change your body’s tolerance to those stresses and then make you as efficient as possible, you'll live happily ever after!
