Can Active Release Technique® Help Alleviate Pain?

Monday, May 14, 2012

I am often asked how Active Release Technique® (ART) differs from other forms of soft tissue work, such as massage or trigger point therapy.  The not-so-simple answer is that ART® is a patented form of manual therapy that uses active movement and therapist-applied tension in order to relieve pain and dysfunction of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves.  In order to determine if ART® would be an effective treatment for a particular injury, it is helpful to understand how ART® helps alleviate the dysfunction of an injury.

Surf's Up!

Thursday, April 19, 2012

A sport that is often overlooked, but flourishes in the winter and early spring, is surfing.  It is a good workout for your entire body and requires more than average balance and coordination. The only problem, in the winter/spring here in New England, is the cold. However, there is a way around this, and it is not expensive, but I will save the information for that until the end.

Stretching to Combat Long Hours Sitting

Wednesday, April 11, 2012
Working in the financial district, there is a huge concentration of busy, working people. These people then become my busy, working patients.  Due to time constraints, some may not get to the gym as often as they’d like, or take the time to stretch as often as they’d like.  As a result, patients often ask what they can do to stretch out after sitting at a desk all day, if they aren’t going to make it to the gym. Keep in mind, throwing your leg up on your desk may elicit some strange looks from coworkers, so you may find these to be “closed door exercises!”

I have an osteo what? Knee Pain explained!

Monday, March 26, 2012

It seems like lately everyone in my circle of friends either has, or knows someone who has, a knee injury.  Of these people, a handful of them have cartilage tears.  Often, I am asked what to do about it.  Will I need surgery?  What happens if I don’t get surgery?  Will it get worse?  Can I still run or play sports?  Since I’ve been bombarded with these questions lately, and since I actually have a cartilage defect in my knee, I thought I’d give you a brief overview of the types of cartilage damage and what can be done for them medically.
