What is Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)?
The iliotibial band (ITB) is a thick, fibrous band that runs from the outside of your hip down to the outside of your knee. Muscles of the tenor fascia lata (TFL) insert into the ITB, and function to abduct the hip, or bring it away from your body. When the hip abductor muscles are weak, the ITB is overworked. With repetitive overuse, the ITB can become inflamed and irritated, causing pain at your hip, at the outside part of your knee, or even radiating to just below your knee. Pain may be present during activity, after activity, or with rest. ITBS can also present concurrently with trochanteric bursitis.
